Where to stay near Zion
Springdale is the obvious answer and it is usually the right one. It is also the most expensive, and there are three good reasons to look elsewhere.
- Closest base
- Springdale, at the gate
- Car free possible
- Yes, from Springdale
- Book ahead
- 4 to 9 months in peak
- In park option
- Zion Lodge, in the canyon
Stay in Springdale if you possibly can
The town shuttle runs the length of it and connects to the park entrance, which means you can leave the car parked for your entire trip. That single fact is worth more than any amenity.
Look further out if Springdale is full, if the rates are beyond your budget, or if you are basing a longer southern Utah trip here rather than only visiting Zion. Each of those has a different best answer.
What each base actually trades off
Distance is the wrong way to think about this. The real question is whether you can reach the park without driving and parking, because parking is the constraint that ruins Zion mornings. Drive times below are approximate.
| Base | Getting to the park | Trade off |
|---|---|---|
| Springdale | Town shuttle to the entrance, or walk | Highest rates, books out earliest. Everything else about it is ideal. |
| Zion Lodge, in the canyon | Already inside, on the park shuttle line | Unmatched location and very limited availability. Books further ahead than anything. |
| Rockville and Virgin | Short drive, then park at the entrance | Quieter and cheaper, but you take on the parking problem. |
| Hurricane and La Verkin | Roughly half an hour by car | Noticeably cheaper, more choice, more chain options. You will drive every day. |
| St George | About an hour by car | A real town with an airport and full services. Too far for early starts. |
| East side and Kanab | Over the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway | Best if you are combining Zion with Bryce or the Grand Canyon north rim. |
The parking argument, in one paragraph
In peak season the park lots fill early in the morning and stay full. If you are not staying in Springdale you either arrive very early, park in town and take the town shuttle in, or spend part of your morning looking for a space. None of those is a disaster, but it is the daily cost of a cheaper room, and it is worth pricing honestly before you book.

Common questions about staying near Zion
Is it worth paying more to stay in Springdale?
Usually yes, for one reason: you can leave the car parked and use the town shuttle to the park entrance. In peak season that saves you the daily parking problem, which is the single most common frustration visitors report.
How far ahead should I book lodging near Zion?
Four to nine months for spring and fall dates. Zion Lodge inside the canyon books further ahead than anything. Winter is much easier and often available at short notice.
Can I visit Zion without a car?
From Springdale, yes. The town shuttle runs the length of the main road and connects to the park entrance, and the park shuttle covers every major trailhead in the canyon. Getting to Springdale in the first place is the part that needs a plan.
Is there lodging inside Zion National Park?
Yes, Zion Lodge sits in the canyon on the park shuttle line. It is the only in park lodging and availability is very limited.
